Liposuction
This surgical fat-reducing procedure has been performed successfully for several decades. It does require local anesthetic to numb the surgical site, as well as general anesthesia or sedation. The determination about the form of sedation is made during the consultation visit during which we identify the amount of fat you want removed. General anesthesia is usually included for larger areas. Liposuction also means incisions, though the size of these tiny wounds is typically no more than 1/4 inch. Finally, because this is a surgical procedure, patients should expect a few weeks of down time. This does not mean pain, but it could mean slight discomfort, swelling, and bruising.
CoolSculpting
This non-surgical procedure is appealing to patients who prefer a completely non-invasive approach to fat reduction. There are no incisions, so no need for anesthetic. However, that does not mean treatment is completely pain-free. Patients treated with freezing temperature do note that they experience sensations such as tingling, pain, and numbness in the treatment area. Also, the post-freezing tissue massage can be someone unpleasant. Fortunately, it only lasts a few moments.
Aside from the experience itself, an important question about treatment is the extent of results one can achieve. It is important to know that neither liposuction nor CoolSculpting will tighten skin or underlying tissue. This is notable, especially for patients who may have loose skin after fat reduction.
